Handling Negative Publicity or Customer Concerns

The problems related to the Kimkins diet reveal how we must handle problems that emerge from our businesses with clarity, honesty and integrity.

If we're in business, there will be a time we're challenge on a product or service we offer, it simply comes with the territory. How we respond to the challenge is what will make or break us in relationship to it.

What is one of the key elements in handling a situation like this? Open communication about the concerns.

If we don't openly and honestly communicate to our customers, or in some cases the general public, we will find ourselves in big trouble.

Even if we don't have answers in the beginning, we need to at least get in front of the problem by letting concerned people know that we'll be getting back to them as soon as possible with information addressing their concerns or allegations being made.

It's imperative that we don't gather the wagons around and protect ourselves from the outside world. If we're in business, we basically lose the right to do that in these circumstances, even though it's the natural human response to take that sort of action.

I would say that the great majority of problems related to these types of circumstances is in simply being willing to honestly communicate and keeping channels of communication open. It's surprising how quickly the viral effect can be stopped and people listen to what's being said rather than the gathering rumors that will come if it isn't taken care of.

The other thing is we must tackle the issues concerned and let people know if their concerns are justified. If so, then we need to talk specifically about what it is, and not throw a bunch of nonsense out there that doesn't talk about it.

Another aspect of dealing with problems like this is taking too long to get your side of things out there. If you wait too long, it can take on a life of its own, and turn into something so far beyond what is the real issue, that it turns into a mountain what should have been a little hill.

Dealing with negative publicity and customer concerns is all about communication. Do that with integrity and honesty and the vast majority of problems will never come to the point where the Kimkins diet has now come.

Thank you for using Kimkins as an example of how not to run a business. Running a business is usually a reflection on the type of person they are in general. Handling things with honesty and integrity is not something that can be learned in business 101. It has to be at the core of the character in the person operating the business. Not that all mistakes are made by unscrupulous individuals, but those that operate businesses without basic values are going to make the mistake of trying to lie to the public and betray the consumer further by avoiding the responsibility they have to those consumers.
I expect my 5 and 7 year old children to present themselves with goodwill, honesty and integrity, not perfection, but the ability to admit when they have done wrong. So why would I expect less from the adults profiting from my business? The fact is I don't.

I Am Not Ready To Make Nice with Kimkins

I'm actually grateful that Heidi Diaz handled complaints so poorly! If not, her scam might have continued unchecked! More people would have been defrauded, more peopel would have become ill, and Heidi would have continued to gather wealth.
