General Mills (GIS) has announced a voluntary recall of its Jeno's and Totino's frozen pizza products because of concerns they may be contaminated with E. Coli.
The recall is directed toward pizzas that had pepperoni topping specifically, as 9 of 21 people that got ill, said they had eaten either a Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni on it before they got sick.
So far 8 of the 21 victims have been hospitalized, and four have developed a form of kidney failure.
While at this time there is no conclusive determination that the pizzas are the source of the problem, the company voluntarily performed the recall just in case.
"We took action on that basis as a precaution, because of the possibility that a link might exist," said General Mills spokesman Tom Forsythe. "However, to date we have found no E. coli in our plant, and we have found no E. coli in our products."
The company is withholding the name of the pepperoni supplier until it's proven where the problem has come from, and if it's at all connected to the pepperoni.
Symptoms of E. Coli include diarrhea and stomach cramps. People have to be careful though, as it can end up developing complications which could lead to kidney failure.
With the large number of recalls of products this year, it may point to a need to take more action by companies themselves to ensure suppliers are checking their products safely and thoroughly. Some have already started that process.
General Mills Instructions to get replacement pizzas:
