Andy Grove: Only the Paranoid Survive - 39

Grove's Mission is His Product

There are times when I talk to business owners when they are confused about the difference between their vision, purpose or mission of the company and the product or service they offer. In the end, the two really should be one.

What I mean by that is all products and services should emerge out of the purpose of the business, not be developed separately from it.

That's the reason Grove had as his mission the product. He didn't see the two as being separate things, but interrelated to one another. That's as it should be.

At that time someone will ask about the great ideas that come about from communications within the business that don't seem to connect to the core purpose of the business. It could be that ideas for a new business or division could be coming forth from the talk, if it isn't related in any way to the core mission.

We have to be careful there in that we don't want to discourage good ideas coming forth, but at the same time go in directions that could pull the company from its main objective.

Everything must be filtered through the purpose of the company. If it doesn't meet that criteria, it shouldn't be adopted into it. At that time, if it seems it has great potential, we may want to seriously consider building another business around it.

One other thing to consider in Grove's comment above, is that we want to be careful not to consider the mission of the company as something other than our product. People are putting increasing pressure on businesses to move toward being like a government, in that they're trying to put guilt on them to focus on what they call "giving back."

The best way we can give as a company is in keeping our products, services and servicing them the major focus we have; that is what our mission should be. Get off of that and we risk everything we have.
