"He was simply describing his own life, his experiences, what he's observed works and doesn't work in business and investing."
This was the reaction to Warren Buffett when a group of students and professors joined him in Omaha for a day to talk about Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) and how he built it into the company he has.
Buffett's demeanor was so disarming, that many of the people felt so relaxed they would find themselves forgetting who he was and thinking of him as some regular person down the street. Of course I think Buffett doesn't consider himself any more or any less than that: the reason this communicatio style works so well for him.
When we train, mentor and communicate with our people, this is a good thing to consider in how we get them to understand how to succeed. What better way than to show them through our experiences how it has come to pass for us. I'm thinking mostly on how it relates to business leadership here.
Buffett is so multifaceted, he could easily cover several different topics with indepth understanding and meaning from experience on all of them.
I've found this style of communication works particularly well. The success of communicating this way is the willingness to be open in all our foibles and successes. People respond and open up to listent to someone that's real. And the reality is we all make mistakes on the way to our successes.
Putting both types of experiences forth to let our people know we understand where they're at, is a major part of success in raising up great people in our companies.
Warren Buffett is a great mentor and teacher by simply letting people know who he is and all about his failures and successes on his business and financial journey. I think this is one of the more powerful tools we have for teaching and motivating.
