A special alternative high school in Cleveland was under seige today by a lone gunman who opened fire on students and teachers.
Three students and two adults were injured during the shootings, with the gunman evidently killing himself after the rampage. The gunman was a student at the school, but didn't attend classes today.
SucessTech Academy is a school in the Cleveland city school district that focuses on entrepreneurship and technology.
"It's a shining beacon for the Cleveland Metropolitan School System," said John Zitzner, founder and president of E City Cleveland, a nonprofit group aimed at teaching business skills to inner-city teens. "It's orderly, it's disciplined, it's calm, it's focused."
The school has 240 students, with the majority being black, and a few white and Hispanic students. The school has been opened for five years. Its graduation rate is 94 percent, in contrast to the 55 percent across the district.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said the teens included two boys, aged 14 and 18, and a 14-year-old girl who fell when fleeing the situation, injuring her knee. The adults were two males aged 42 ad 57.
The older student and 57-year-old teacher were in good condition, while the conditions of the other patients aren't being released at this time, said Metro Health Medical Center spokeswoman Eileen Korey.
