With the World Series starting tonight between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies, it made me reflect on one of the things that makes business leadership and management so fulilling: the accomplishment of our people.
If nothing else, a truly effective business leader will live to see their people succeed. It's like watching your children or grandchildren grow up and thrive in whatever they choose in life.
Another aspect is the pain we go through as we silently and sometimes verbally cheer them on while they stumble and try to do they best they can in difficult circumstances. Then when they succeed, something of the pride of a "job well done" wells up within us as we feel that sense of fulfilment, and that we've done our jobs right.
One other important thing to consider, is no one operates in a vacuum. While everybody will have their unique, individual part to play, the success comes as a team, and as a team it should be celebrated.
While we can acknowledge extraordinary, individual performances, they still aren't possible unless there is a team in place to help that person excel.
There's nothing more satisfying as a business leader than to celebrate and feel the fulfilment of our people exceeding and succeeding in business and life.
If we take care of them in this way, they'll take care of us beyond our wildest dreams.
