"The best way to predict the future is to create it."
This is one of my favorite quotes by Peter Drucker, or anybody for that matter. It reminds me of something said by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple (AAPL), when he commented that people really don't know what they want.
The point is we can let people know what they want, by creating it for them. This is one of the reasons so many studies, surveys and polls don't make a lot of sense and can contradict each other in a big way. Simply asking a question will cause someone to think and answer in a certain way, even if it's not really the way they would eventually act.
We need to be more bold in our businesses and leadership, by looking at the future we want and setting our goals toward that, rather than taking endless polls and numerous focus groups, which can offer only possibilities at best.
There are a lot of these types of intitiatives that even with data showing people want something, fail miserably when implemented according to their alleged wishes. The reason why is because most people really don't know what they want. That's why we must give it to them.
That's why a business that creates the future will be far ahead of those that follow the leaders. A future creator will know where they're going and why. Those that follow - well - simply follow.
So if we want to know what the future his, we don't have to go any further than the stong vision and will of the company, its leaders and its people. Give consumers the future we create, and it's surprising how many will enter in.
The future is really what we decide we're going to do today, and then marketing and communicating that proposed future to our customers. It's not too difficult to predict a future we're dictating. It's done more by companies and organizations than many really know.
