"Speed, simplicity and self-confidence are closely intertwined."
If you want to destroy great people in your company, make things complicated; it's a sure recipe for destruction. Simplicity is the order of the day, and a prerequisite for speed.
While speed in business is almost considered a religious imperative, there are a couple things connected to speed that must exist if speed is to be of value to a company.
The major ingredient is simplicity. It's impossible to move nimbly and quick if your business is set up in a complicated way, or rules that can be interpreted in a number of ways are instituted to cover everybody's butts.
Another major aspect of simplicity is how it can instill confidence in our people. Make something too difficult to understand and people will lose confidence as they start to believe they can't function or excel at a high level.
The point, as Welch understood, is speed is dependent on simplicity and confidence of our people.
In a number of ways, speed is indispensible to being competitive, but at the same time simplicity, and the resultant confidence of our people, are what allow speed to be a real part of our business.
Speed drives our competitiveness, but simplicity and confidence are the foundation for speed.
