"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."
We've probably heard all the time that hindsight is the easiest way to connect the events or, as Jobs said, "dots" in our lives. Anybody that has a memory and takes the time can do that. Nobody can connect the dots in the future though, and so we all must believe in something going ahead.
As any honest stock broker or intellegent invester knows, you can't guarantee any performance based on the past; it doesn't work that way.
So we have to trust in the best data we have available as we go forward. We must trust that the decisions we make based upon the most accurate data we can get will lead us to our desired goals.
Of course we're not talking about blind trust, or stubborn unwillingness to change direction when we need to. But we do need to trust enough so we're not paralyzed into inaction, and lose our way by default.
Jobs went on to say we have to trust in something - "your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever." He added this particular approach has never failed or let him down, and made all the difference in his life.
Apple's (AAPL) and Pixar's results through the years has confirmed Jobs beliefs.
