Dell (DELL) is expanding its reach in physical stores, as it now has an agreement in place with office supply retailer Staples (SPLS) to sell Dell computers, monitors and printers at their 1,400 store across the U.S.
Dell has been moving past its former focus on the direct sales model, as customer service problems and too many varieties were hampering sales. That and being overtaken by rival Hewlett-Packard (HP) as the No. 1 computer company in the world, has caused them to take these steps.
Most industry observers say that the growing desire by consumers to see a computer before buying has been a chief problem in their decline as well.
From Staples perspective, Ron Sargent, chairman and chief executive of the company said, "We know our customers will appreciate the ability to see, touch, and immediately take Dell products to the home or office."
The company will also offer Dell products on their Web site also.
Some of the products being sold through the Staple stores in the beginning will be Inspiron 1721 and 1521 notebooks, Inspiron 530 desktops, 948 and 926 all-in-one inkjet printers, 1320c laser printers, SE198WFP 19-inch wide-screen flat panel LCD monitors, and E228WFP 22-inch monitors. Staples also will offer ink and toner for the majority of Dell printers.
