Roger Ailes and what He Learned from Chet Collier - Part 1

In a transcript of an interview on the Online Wall Street Journal with Fox News President Roger Ailes, he offers some of the more important managment lessons he learned from his colleague and friend Chet Collier, who recently passed away. He specifically talked on how to handle our people.

One of key points he said he learned was in hiring people.

When offered with a choice between qualifications or personal qualities, he said a decision should always be based on personal qualities.

A job can always be taught, but who a person really is can't. Things like integrity, not quitting under pressure and a drive for excellence were some of the qualities Ailes listed as important.

Qualities should be the key reason for hiring people. What makes a company great, is the standard it maintains when hiring people. Keep that standard, and you'll end up with a great company.

I think its imperative that we keep our standards high in the qualities of the people we hire.

A practical thing we can include in our businesses to ensure that happens, is to have a great training system in place to bring the qualifications of the job for that person up to standard. That keeps us from the temptation to hire just anyone to simply fill a vacant position.

This is one of the reasons some companies have endless employee problems: they don't have a great training system in place, so they are forced to base hiring decisions qualifications rather than qualities. Great training overcomes that problem.

Roger's comments above are very interesting. Have you ever met Roger Ailes? I can't believe a man like him got hired on his "personal qualities" as most of them are bad. He is known for shooting from the hip and the "master of attack" towards his competitors or towards those who do not share his viewpoint.
