The ratification of the agreed upon contract with Chrysler has come to a rocky road, as three more local unions have rejected the contract.
Those voting against it were, Local 1183 at Chrysler's Newark, Del., Local 122, which represents 1,515 workers at the Twinsburg, Ohio, stamping plant, and Local 961 in Detroit. Local 110 in Fenton, Mo., representing 2,900 workers, voted against it today as well.
While the vote at the Newark plant was expected because it's slated to close, Richard McDonaugh Jr., president of Local 1183, said he was appalled at the locals that are voting down the agreement at plants that have future product guarantees. He says the rejections are coming about from "dissidents spreading misinformation."
Much of that misinformation is related to the two-tier wage system, where existing workers are being told they'll have their wages cut, whereas the contract doesn't say that at all, rather it relates to new hires.
Voting is scheduled to finish by Wednesday, with a majority of UAW's 45,000 workers needing to ratify the contract before it can go into effect.
If the deal is rejected, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger will most likely be forced to go back to the negotiating table. He is hoping to get the deal ratified quickly so negotiators can focus on the Ford Motor Co. (F) talks.
