
The way McDonalds, (MCD) has managed their popular Monopoly Game promotion has brought extraordinary results for the company.
They've begun their newest promotion this year, and it looks like it'll be as big a hit as ever.
On average, over the last four years, the company has increased sales by 8.25 percent, with actual customer transactions growing by 4 percent. That's a great response to any marketing effort.
One reason this really works is the shear number of winners. For example, over the last four years, there have been over 350 million winners. There has also been two $1 million winners during that time, along with other big prize winners.
McDonalds has tapped into the sweepstakes craze that so many people love to enter.
As Bonnie Carlson, President of the Promotion Marketing Association, Inc. says, "Millions of people each year enter sweepstakes and other promotional games because these games are exciting and provide the opportunity to win prizes. The industry has always maintained a high level of integrity, and we know that of the people who play promotional games each year, thousands and thousands actually win."
This year McDonalds has changed sponsors, as they changed from Bestbuy who was a sponsor and where customers could collect "Best Buy Bucks," this year Toys R Us has entered the game with "Toys R Us Bucks, along with Foot Locker and American Express.
The game also included an online element, where consumers are given a "second chance" to win a prize.
These types of games are really great viral promotions, as people that win love to brag about the deals they get as a result. That of course generates more interest, because people believe they also have a real chance to win, which drives authenticity into the mix.
When you have promotions like this where people believe they're authentic and real, it will drive interest and traffic to your place of doing business and Internet site. McDonalds has managed this well and brought on partners of interest to consumers, which has made it such a popular marketing tool.
