“A laurel rested upon becomes wilted.”
This is a saying that Mary Kay Ash would always repeat, as she was committed to change. The one factor she knew she could rely upon was there was going to alway be constant change in her industry. We can all count on that too.
A couple things we need to consider with change, is knowing the difference between change as it relates to the demands of the market, and principles the business is built upon, which can never change.
One thing in any industry is those that want to rest on what they've accomplished, are not too many steps away from being overcome by their competitors or unknown disruptors waiting in the wings.
Even if we're not exactly sure where our industry is going at any one time, we need to be in a continuous state of experimentation with new products or services, or looking at ways we could possibly be disrupted, and have things in place if that happens.
Of course we can't simply look at products alone, but at distribution and sales models as well. Every part of our business has the potential to be disrupted at one point or another. We must be vigilant and practice scenario planning for various aspects of our businesses.
In doing that, we're kept on a constant alert to the reality that things are changing daily, and we must keep ourselves from the temptation to wanting to settle down in our temporary success.
If we understand our successes today are only temporary, we can then have the right attitude and posture going forward.
