“I believe that most successful people are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”
From my observations and experience, I find Mary Kay's comment above absolutely true.
If you go around and meet people successful personally, financially or in business, you'll find they're really not that different from anybody else.
Now the media will attempt to give them legendary status to get us interested in reading about them, but overall they're very normal people.
Having said that, there is something extraordinary about these ordinary people, and that's their extraordinary determination, as Mary Kay said.
Nothing can stop someone with a goal which includes the refusal to stop until they attain it. Now there may be numerous roadblocks, detours and restarts, but that doesn't matter to someone with determination.
This is important because I read a lot these days about something called "talent." Many people writing don't even say people anymore. I think this is a huge mistake. It puts the emphasis on the wrong thing. I don't even know what a "talent" is. But I do know what a person is, and the type of person I want working in my businesses.
As far as people go, I don't think there's a talent shortage, like is asserted, I think it's more a "quality" shortage, as far as it relates to the makeup of human beings.
The idea that "talent" makes the difference between success or failure in pursuing our goals is ridiculous. We need to know what we want to accomplish, prepare for the task, and then adapt as we go along while never quitting. That's what successful people do.
As a matter of fact, if you read the biographies of successful people, you'll find many of them don't consider themselves talented at all. They just want something bad enough to never give up their pursuit of it.
The idea that we must be some type of talented superstar is only another roadblock put out their for people to have to go around. The road of success is littered with the casualities of people who had tremendous possiblities but lacked the determination to see it through.
