Managing and Brand Consistency: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady

The difference between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as brands is enlightening as far as business branding, and branding of products or services go.

For Tom Brady, he represents that perfected type of success, something other successful people relate to, but not what the average person would.

Peyton Manning on the other hand, reeks of being a regular guy, and people think of him as a neighbor they could sit down and talk with at any time.

Brady represents what most people could never be, while Manning represents what most people are.

If either of these two were to suddenly change direction and develop a different persona, it wouldn't resonate as real with people; it wouldn't be consistent with their brand.

In our businesses, we must filter whatever we do through what we want to represent. Tom Brady at this time is promoting the types of products that higher income people would use, while Peyton is promoting things everyday people use, like Satellite TV.

If Brady starting promoting things regular people would use, it wouldn't work, as the average person wouldn't relate to him in that way, the same way with Manning, if he were to attempt to market something to people with higher incomes, it wouldn't feel right, as he's not thought of as the type that would interact with that type of lifestyle.

Many large companies still attempt to go outside their brand, and learn the hard way that people won't follow. Wal-Mart attempted this with their attempt to bring a higher quality clothing to their stores, which consumers rejected. It didn't fit with who Wal-Mart is.

Consistency is the key as far as brands go. We must stay within the parameters of what we represent if we want to stay successful over a long period of time.
