
Last post we talked about the band Radiohead taking charge of their careers and making moves that will benefit them and their brand.
When you consider Britney Spears and her meltdown, which has now culminated in losing physical custody of her children "until further order of the court," you see the total opposite.
A Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner has ordered Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline to take physical custody of the children on noon Wednesday.
This isn't just about Spears and her personal life, as far as management goes, it's about her losing control of her professional life as well.
When you consider her ugly performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she was completely unprepared in any way, you see a snapshot of her in all areas of her life. People have left her camp right and left as she has evidently lost control of her entire life.
In management, we know that we don't have control of many of the outer circumstances that can swirl around us, but the one thing we must have control of is our lives. That we can take charge of.
To give up control like Spears has, will always show itself in outward behaviors and results, as a person with no control of themselves inwardly, can in no way influence the things outwardly around them.
If nothing else, business leaders need to have inner control. It doesn't guarantee everything will go as we like, but it will increase the chances that things outside our control will be better handled.
Britney Spears has lost both.
