With another teacher being charged for having sex with an underage teen, it brings to mind the need for those in authority to take their positions much more seriously, while understanding the responsibility that goes with being in a leadership position in any circumstance.
The teacher, Holly Anna Hatcher, was arrested on Thursday, after confessing to having sexual relations with a 17-year-old student. She admitted to having sex with the teen six different times.
Hatcher had only been hired by the Gallatin school in August of 2007. It's located in Tennessee.
Hatcher has been charged with six counts of statutory rape, and was released on $6,000 bond. The charge is a misdemeanor in Tennessee. Other charges may be filed as the investigation goes forward.
She was a history and social studies teacher, while also being the volleyball coach at the school.
Anybody in a position of authority, no matter what field it's in, needs to understand that the more authority we have, that more responsibility comes with it. People in positions of authority must exercise great restraint and integrity when interacting with those in their charge.
Another thought in reference to hiring, it shows how we must have a number of filters in place to weed out these types of people. While there is no way to find everything out about a person, it is our job to do the best we can to discover everything about them.
In the public school system, there are far too many people entering that shouldn't be around young people.
If nothing else, there needs to be serious training and communication on the issue of abuse of authority in any business or organization. Being in authority means you're going to be trusted; it's a shame and a crime, both legally and morally to take advantage of someone from that position. We must be better than that.
