"Getting on the Right Train"
When talking about "getting on the right train," Warren Buffett was talking about moving in the right direction. He says while there is no course in a business school called "Getting on the Right Train," in reality it's extremely important.
He goes on to say that if you get on the right train, it can carry someone a long way, even if you're an average passenger.
What he's talking about here is learning by experience, but not necessarily your own. If you can learn by someone else's experience, it can carry you a long way.
Buffett also likens the management of your career to investing, where how difficult it is isn't relevant. "You can save yourself money and pain by getting on the right train," or learning from the experience of others, he said.
All of this is another way of saying we must choose our mentors wisely.
The majority of business leaders I've known all say the same thing. Many have said it wouldn't matter what they earned if they could work under a mentor who they value. They'd even work for nothing if they had to. The reason why is the mentor can save years of time and effort for an individual.
Buffett credits his success at Berkshire to a few people, with most his success coming from Benjamin Graham.
Every successful person has or has had a mentor or mentors. While it's best if it can be a one on one relationship, it can sometimes be a book, tape or video. Even the yearly reports of Buffett on Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) can be a great source of mentoring; or his live yearly meetings where he interacts with the shareholders. People will invest in Berkshire just to get to sit in and listen to his wisdom.
So when Buffett talks about getting on the right train, he's talking about aligning yourself up with the right mentor or mentors, and they'll be able to take you further and faster than you could ever imagine. The key is picking the right train and getting on it.
