While the expected protest from the largely mom-and-pop retail businesses in India concerning Wal-Mart (WMT) partnering with Bharti to grow out the retail business has made some noise, but overall, many people in India are glad to have the venture starting to take form.
Bharti Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal commented: "Farmers want this. Customers want a better experience and to save money. They want it -- which means the country wants it."
Of all India's retail market, only 3 percent of the $350 billion market includes large retail companies. The Indian market only allows foreign retailers selling multiple brands to sell wholesale or through franchise deals. Foreign companies representing a single brand can own a 51 percent stake in a local joint venture.
"I think it's a big change for India, the move from mom-and-pop to organized retail," Raj Jain, head of Wal-Mart's India operations, said in an interview. "I think most people understand that it is a necessary evolution which has to go through for everybody to benefit from and for the economy."
What's already good about this, is before their first store opens, it is already causing retail in India to change for the better, as small and medium-sized suppliers are learning what they need to do to be a Wal-Mart supplier.
Another good sign is some of the family-owned businesses are starting to adopt the wholesale way of doing business to compete with some of the larger players in pricing.
In spite of the protests and fears of small retail businesses, an increasing amount of people want to see the changes in retail represented by Wal-Mart and also Reliance Industries Ltd.
As Mittal said above, farmers are in strong support of the initiative, and consumers are looking forward to saving money and receiving a better experience.
Along with capital and wholesale expertise, Wal-Mart will also manage the supply chain.
Over the long haul, this will be good for India, its consumers and Wal-Mart.
