"No institution can possibly survive if it needs geniuses or supermen to manage it. It must be organized in such a way as to be able to get along under a leadership composed of average human beings."
The reason Drucker says no institution can survive if it depends on geniuses or supermen to run it, is because if it did, it would be set up the wrong way from the beginning.
Where in the world has there ever been a business or any type of institution that is made up of superstars? It has never existed. Some have thought they existed, but in reality they haven't.
A business set up to attempt to cater to what it considers geniuses, will fail as soon as the alleged genius leaves the stage - but probably before.
Even if you were to consider sports teams, you couldn't do it. The reason why is every player on the team has a function to perform. If you had everyone on the team that was an alleged genius or superman, who would take care of the really important things?
Look at some of the owners of sports teams in the past that assembled almost an all-star team to compete. While there were times they won, most the time they didn't.
If you've ever met people that assume or think their geniuses, you'd know they're not good for much. They have the elitest attitude, something destructive to building a solid business.
Another thing that is destructive with those that think they're geniuses is they can't be taught; they think they know it all. Just ask them.
The major reason an organization couldn't survive is the very nature of having to employ geniuses to run it. If it takes a genius to run a business, who in the world would you be serving? What type of product would you be selling? Who would understand what you were doing?
Any product or service coming out of something like this wouldn't relate to the everyday person. The reason why is those who think they're geniuses or above others can't relate to the everyday person. A business built by and for geniuses to run it would collapse under the weight of its own complexity.
Businesses must be built simple and in a way that the ordinary person can understand. Try to get cute with complexity and pride and it will cost you big time. Regular people work in business, so a business needs to be set up in a regular way.
