Welch's 21 Steps to Management Greatness - 20
Have Fun
The idea of enjoying and having fun on the job isn't new; whether it's a manager or a regular worker. What is important is why we must create a business culture that encourages people to enjoy what they're doing.
Welch said: "Fun must be a big element in your business strategy. No one should have a job they don't enjoy. If you don't wake up energized and excited about tackling a new set of challenges, then you might be in the wrong job."
Again, the reason why fun must be included in our business culture is the very nature of business in general, and that's that it can burn people out if there isn't a relief valve within a business. That relief valve is having fun.
What fun does in override the stress that will inevitably come to workers and managers. If people start to experience burnout, it won't be long before the business will suffer in a big way. Either people will leave or their work will start to suffer in quality and quantity.
Another great aspect of having fun is it can help relieve tensions that exist between employees. When people are enjoying themselves on the job, there's a healing effect that simply comes from the actions and attitudes themselves. Even when there are problems that arise, they tend to be much less than in a business that doesn't have an enjoyable culture.
Jack Welch was a very intense guy, yet people could put up with him because he really enjoyed what he did and it spread to those he came in contact with.
When it comes down to it, if managers and workers aren't enjoying what they're doing, the business will suffer greatly. We need to find ways to have fun that all workers can partake in. The great companies have a culture of fun and workers enjoying what they do.

What I like about a lot of Jack Welch's teachings is they are very true in business, but just as important in life as well.
