"Jobs succeeded because ... when he saw an opportunity, he was single-minded in his focus and in his desire to take advantage of it." ~ Seth Godin
A great business leader, like Steve Jobs, will have a type of single-mindedness when they see something that can be taken advantage of, that everything around them seems to get sucked into that focus; everything starts to adapt, adjust and form around it.
Single-mindedness is one of the most powerful attributes a person can have, as long as they see things correctly, and is combined with passion.
When someone truly believes in what they're doing, they'll draw everything and everyone around them to that idea or concept - like a magnet.
If nothing else, Jobs had this in spades. When he is right, it takes him to extraordinary heights, when wrong, it can also take him to deep lows.
The best anybody can do is take in the best data and information available and make decisions that result in single-minded, passionate commitment.
Success can only come about from this way of living. This is why we can't fear making mistakes or wrong decisions. Someone that is passionate, like Jobs has been with Apple (AAPL), will at times be blinded by that passion to mistakes, while having their eyes opened in times of extraordinary breakthroughs.
This is why it's always part of a successful leaders' makeup that they are able to stick with things, whether they're up or down.
The more single-minded we are, the higher successes we can achieve, along with equal failure. The two coexist together.
What separates the highly successful from those that aren't, is the ability to make mistakes without destroying the company. They are able to be right more times than wrong, and the mistakes they do make are able to be recovered from, even when they're big ones.
All opportunities may not work out, but for those who focus like Jobs does, it's impossible not to try and go after what they believe they see. To not do it would make us less than we are.
