When I heard that singer Ryan Adams threw another tantrum at a Minneapolis show, some of the responses by his band member made me think of business leaders and listening to their people.
For example, guitarist Neal Casal said about the meltdown: "I don't know what the story was. I just play guitar."
Pedal steel guitarist Jon Graboff added, "What can I say? I'm not the monitor guy. Ryan's the boss."
Adams also did this in the area in 2003, at the famous, or rather, infamous even at his First Avenue performance in 2003.
The key thought to me is the danger in not listening to what other people have to say, or creating the culture where people feel free to talk to you if they think you're wrong.
When you look at the comments the band members made about Adams, they're basically saying there's no way they're going to commment on or confront Adams on his behavior.
If we as business leaders aren't willing to listen to our people, we will find ourselves harming not only ourselves, but the very people we're supposed to be serving.
Ryan Adams won't be changing for the better any time soon. While I know part of this is his attempt to keep his "bad guy" image intact, at the same time, this seems to be something that went beyond what it should have.
When I'm talking about listening to our people, I'm not talking about them running us, I'm talking about taking seriously the things they have to say concerning whatever we're doing at the time.
In reality, there's nothing we should be doing without tapping into the variety of thought and input that our people on the frontlines experience.
Adams looks like he has no interest in the input of his fellow workers. We have to be better than that.
