“Our Company was begun with only one objective.”
The one constant factor involved in any business, is that we can count on the need to change as being a way of life for us.
A problem that can arise from that is the temptation to move off our purpose in response to that reality.
The principles that make our business what it is should never change, as they emerge from the objective, or purpose for the business. To move off of that is to move off of our reason for being a business. Change should never determine who we are or what we represent.
On the other hand, concerning products and services, and even cultural changes, we need to be constantly on the lookout for what is happening around us and be ready to adapt as needed.
For example, when Mary Kay started the company, which had the purpose of providing women with opportunity for success, the job market wasn't very competitive with Mary Kay, so the company structured their reward system based on that.
Once women entered the job market in larger numbers, wages started increasing and it put pressure on Mary Kay's business model, as women were less apt to join Mary Kay, because they were able to make good money working for other businesses.
In response, the company had to adapt and change their payment structure to make working for Mary Kay more attractive to potential consultants. It worked, and women started joining Mary Kay on a larger basis.
In all of this, Mary Kay didn't change the purpose or objective of the business, they simply adapted to the changing marketplace and demographic.
What makes this easier to do, is working from a single objective. When we start being tempted to expand our purpose for reasons of growth, we find ourselves losing who we are and not able to respond to the world changing around us.
Staying loyal to the objective of the company makes it easy to identify what the problem is and how to respond to it without abandoning what we represent.
The secret is maintaining the one objective a business should have. Go beyond that and it will become more difficult, if not impossible, to deal with the changing world around us.
