I began asking myself, "Why are you theorizing about a dream company? Why don’t you just start one?"
Mary Kay understood that there was a huge difference between theory and being practical. One of the biggest roadblocks to success are going over an endless amount of theories and scenarios, while never getting our hands dirty be launching something.
I'm not just talking about starting a business, but it applies to anyone in a business leadership position, or even regular employees.
It's fine to throw ideas around to come up with strategies, but it can become almost a drug you get high on. The reason being it keeps you from taking practical steps if you try to reach some type of refined, perfect state in theory.
Instead of endlessly coming up with dream ideas, put some ideas into practice and build from there.
Let our competitors endlessly come up with ideas that aren't put into practice. Only those in the practical game are really those "in" the game. Everybody else are pretenders.
Don't be a pretender, be a doer. Theory without execution is an illusion. It may make you feel good but it can deceive you into thinking something's happening just because you're thinking about it.
We need to keep Mary Kay's question before us at all times: are we theorizing about something or getting something going? Theory can become an excuse for not taking action by making us think we haven't come up with "perfect" solutions or ideas.
In the end we need to be doers and take action based on the best available information. We need to get past dreams and start to bring them into reality. We must resist allowing dreams, vision and theory to keep us from bringing about practical, real success.
