The idea behind Mary Kay Cosmetics might not have been the most original or creative; after all, Ash had worked for numerous direct-sales companies in the past, and cosmetics were surely nothing new. However, what made Mary Kay Cosmetics the success that it became was Ash’s single-handed commitment and enthusiasm for her project.
Sometimes when we hear things over and over again, we can become socialized into drowing them out because of repetition. In the case of the comments about Mary Kay above, it may seem redundant to talk about enthusiasm and focused commitment, yet there they are again from all great business leaders.
You can think of today's announcement by Steve Jobs about the new iPhone as another example. It's not like having a portable, wireless phone was anything new when it was introduced by Jobs into the marketplace. It was the same with Mary Kay.
There's just something about enthusiasm and singleness of purpose which is able to find something in even mature markets that can differentiate it from other products that have been around for some time.
Again, think of Mary kay and cosmetics or the direct sales way she chose to implement the operations. There was really nothing new there. She tweaked a few things to make sure it wasn't considered a MLM scheme, but nonetheless, it had still been done overall for a long period of time.
When you truly believe in what you're doing, there is something that all great business leaders see that others don't see. It's almost like enthusiasm triggers some type of inner creativity that gives answers to problems they hadn't seen before.
That enthusiasm and the answer to problems is also very viral in that it catches on in the imagination of those believing in it and takes on a life of its own. From there is can spread rapidly and give a business a quick launch off into success.
What's amazing about all this, is when people are enthusiastic about their creations or projects, it gives consumers or business customers the feel that it's brand new, even if it's an old industry. People like to be part of that feeling of newness and freshness enthusiasm brings to the table.
That and the little tweaks made just enough to differentiate make innovation an ongoing reality for the very best of businesses and business leaders.
