Margaret Thatcher had a rough ride as Education Minister.
Long before Margaret Thatcher was a household name around the world, she was the British "Education Minister" during a very tough historical time.
I bring it up to show a couple different types of experiences that are part of our lives and makeup. One will help us in a major way, and the other can be detrimental to future personal and business growth.
First, experiencing difficult, challenging times can be one of the most beneficial aspects we even encounter in our lives; especially as related to business leadership.
When we go through tough times and learn how to navigate through them, it builds something in our character that can be applied in any circumstance and situation.
The other kind of experience, where we take care of a specific situation, can be detrimental to our businesses, as we can tend to draw on how we did things in the past, rather than look at new ways of taking care of challenges and problems now facing us.
That's why it can be more beneficial to involve people with little or no experience in certain projects, because they don't have preconceived ideas on how to take care of them; they can offer fresh and new perspectives.
We want to look for those in our businesses or when we hire, who have navigated successfully through difficult times in their lives, as they've learned how to succeed and continue on in spite of them.
We should be careful in some areas of our businesses when we enlist those with previous experience, as they can at times hinder going ahead, rather than offering solutions.
There's never too much experience for those seasoned by life, but there can be too much experience from those in specific areas that are based on the past rather than looking toward the future.
