Wal-Mart (WMT) has chosen Margaret A. McKenna to run its Foundation, which last year gave over $270 million to charities.
McKenna was president of Lesley University for 22 years, and grew the enrollment from 2,000 to almost 12,000 during her tenure. Endowments also exploded under her watch, as it grew from around $1 million in 1985 to over $90 million when she left in July of 2007.
McKenna has also been a deputy counsel at the White House and a civil rights lawyer at the Justice department. She has also served on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards.
Shannon Frederick, Wal-Mart spokeswoman said, "She has a proven track record. We were looking for somebody who can help us take our corporate giving to the next level of excellence and help us make a bigger impact with it."
The Wal-Mart Foundation gives to charities that focus on economic opportunities, education and health and human services.
As president of the Wal-Mart Foundation, McKenna will be responsible for setting parameters and priorities to help store managers decide who to give to and how much. She will also manage the relationships between the foundation and national charities.
"Timing is everything," she said. "You don't get many chances in your life to really impact people's lives in a positive way. This is a great chance."
McKenna will report to the foundation's board.
