Has the Britney Spears Brand Self-Destructed?

The performance by Britney Spears was so bad at the VMAs, it makes you wonder why she even appeared. It would have been better if she hadn't.

Getting away from simply doing the Britney bash thing, this was inexcusable from a branding outlook.

When considering Britney Spears as a business, which she is, this was a terrible managment of that business.

Is%20the%20Britney%20Spears%20Brand%20over.jpgThe problem with her performance was it was not only terribly executed, but you could tell she hadn't prepared for the night. It was like she couldn't even move or hadn't practiced her dance moves. In other words, it was like she didn't care how it went.

It seems she thought she could just get into a skimpy outfit and the rest would take care of itself. She was wrong!

The terrible performance also set Britney up for failure by Sarah Silverman following with a stinging and mocking appraisal of what she had just done. It would have been humorous if Britney had actually performed great, but her poor performance made the rebukes by Silverman highlight the shortfalls.

In contrast, I think of Elvis Presley when he made his comeback. He got into shape and worked as hard as he ever had to make his performances something to remember, and they are to this day.

With just about everything on the line for Spears, it's incomprehensible the lack of preparation she had for the performance.

I don't think there's anything her handlers and PR staff can do to reverse this. If they wanted this to work, there should have been someone there to make sure she was ready to give a fantastic performance that showed she was serious about performing again.

What this shows me was Spears is probably finished as a serious artist. If she wasn't willing to prepare for this important time of her career, what will be able to motivate her in the future?

The overall problem for Spears' performance was the obvious lack of interest by Spears in it. If we aren't interested in our brand, other people won't be either.

It seems she has absolutely no one around her that understands what is happening to her as a brand. That doesn't bode well for her future.
