In response to the needs created by the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, Wal-Mart (WMT) started partnering with America's Second Harvest, a domestic relief organization in 2005. Since that time Wal-Mart has helped raise $15 million for the organization's food banks.
America's Second Harvest announced it had received another $4 million from Wal-Mart to support its Backpack Program and help feed hungry Americans.
"We are delighted that Wal-Mart has made such an incredible commitment to ending hunger in America, and we are proud to count them among our strongest supporters," said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "Expanding food distribution and feeding more children among our most critical priorities. Wal-Mart's recent contributions will have a tremendous effect on the lives of thousands of Americans living with chronic food insecurity."
The BackPack Program provides 50,000 children a week with backpacks, across 40 states and Washington D.C.
Along with the backpacks, Wal-Mart's $4 million contribution will be used to provide grants to food banks in the network to buy food and supplies. The charity says as a result of the contribution, they will be able to provide 492,000 backpacks with about 3 million pounds of food in them for hungry children.
From their strong partnership, Wal-Mart and America's Second Harvest have been chosen as finalists for a Corporate Citizenship Award, for their efforts to fight hunger in America. The award is sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) and voted on by the public.
You can find out more and submit votes at http://www.uschamber.com/bclc/awards. Voting is open until October 5.
