Alan Greenspan Needs to Really Retire

Just like retired armchair quarterback Generals, Alan Greenspan needs to quietly go away.

The release of his book "Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," has already generated a lot of interest by bashing President Bush. While he has that right, it makes him look petty, as he has started backpedaling from some things he wrote in it to get big sales.

All of that wouldn't be a big deal, but he's also been throwing his comments around on the best things to do from the perspective of the Federal Reserve in the U.S. Guess what Alan, we have a Federal Reserve chairman, he replaced you - remember?

Trying to cover his butt, Greenspan backs away from his support of tax cuts in 2001, where he testified that it would help the economy grow. He says in the book that his testimony was a mistake.

He also mentions the reason Bush went to war in Iraq was for oil, saying, "I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil." Greenspan has already backed off that assessment, basically acknowledging what he said wasn't true.

I guess all those years in the public eye are too hard for Greenspan to get away from. Obviously someone has coached him to say the things he said in the book and make public comments on what should be done to help the economy; they're part of the marketing campaign to keep his name in front of the public to increase book sales.

For someone of Greenspan's influence and stature, it's too bad he had to go to this level to sell more copies of his book.

Greenspan needs to truly retire, he's not the one we're listening to anymore.
