The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Friday that approximately 1 million Simplicity and Graco cribs have been recalled, after two children became trapped and suffocated. Seven other children have also been trapped in the cribs, but survived.
All cribs recalled were sold under the Simplicity and Graco brands between January 1998 through May 2007. There are a variety of models and model numbers involved in the recall, which are listed below.
Another child died in connection with a newer model crib, which according to Simplicity President Ken Waldman are completely safe, saying, "There are other factors involved with that case." There is an ongoing investigation so Waldman refused to comment more on the details of the case.
With all three deaths, the drop-rail side had been improperly installed by consumers, putting it in upside down. What it does is create a gap in the crib where the children can slide down into and suffocate.
Even if consumers have newer versions, the commission urged people to inspect them to make sure the drop-rail is installed correctly. Hardware for the newer version has a flexible tab at the top of the lower track and a permanent stop at the bottom. In contrast, the older harder included a flexible tab at the bottom of the lower tracks.
One child advocate has concerns the fears from the recall could end up with parents putting their children in less safe environments, like sleeping in the parents' bed. Nancy A. Cowles who is the executive director of Kids in Danger says, "If this scares people out of cribs, then you are going to end up with other injuries."
Recalled Simplicity crib models include: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. The recalled cribs with the Graco logo are the Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and the Trio.
Model numbers on the cribs will be one of these: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760 and 8996. The numbers are on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label attached to the headboard.
For consumers with older hardware the company is offering free repairs. Consumers can contact Simplicity for more information at 888-583-9274.
