The decision by Wal-Mart (WMT) to disgard its former uniform vests has been a boon to troops serving in the U.S. armed forces or former troops as well.
Working together with the VFW, Wal-Mart has taken the former vests of their associates and turned a number of them into greeting cards for members of the armed forces, or lap blankets for those wounded in service.
Wal-Mart approached the VFW for input once it knew it would have all the excess vests. From their input the two ideas came forth mentioned above.
"For more than a decade, we have worked with Wal-Mart to identify and respond to the unmet needs of our U.S. soldiers," said Mike Gormalley, senior director of the VFW Foundation. "When Wal-Mart approached us about the vests recycling project, we were happy to work together for the benefit of our troops currently serving as well as veterans who've served our country."
Wal-Mart added they will continue to work with the VFW to find ways to recycle the almost 1 million vests. Their goal is to recycle them all within a year.
Troops will be able to use the cards for the Holidays to send to their loved ones or send "thinking of you" cards. A total of about 100,000 are expected to be made available. There will also be almost 5,000 lab blankets made for veterans at VA hospitals, homes or that have been injured in duty. The VFW will distribute the blankets in conjunction with Veteran's Day in November.
Along with the VFW, they are working together with Hallmark and Sustainable Solutions, Inc. in the project.
