"Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected."
While the contentiousness of Steve Jobs with his people is one of the known, but also dirty little secrets of the tech world.
We'll cover that another time on managersrealm, but the reason I bring it up now is because it is part of the reason for abrasiveness and contention between Jobs and just about everybody else where he's worked.
In many cases the reason it's always happened around him is his commitment to excellence and quality. Many workers from places with lower standards are greeted with an emotional experience like cold water being thrown in your face. In most cases they hadn't encountered someone with that type of intensity as Jobs had.
That's the point he was making about environment above. Quality and excellence has to be part of a culture; a way of life for a business.
In a way, Apple (AAPL) and other businesses were like Jobs home. And for Jobs, his home was a home of excellence, a home of quality. He didn't want people coming to his business home without having a respect for that.
The banquet he expected his people to eat at the corporate table was one that demanded much more of them than had ever been expected of them before. This caused a lot of problems at times.
For Jobs though, it was the whole meal. If you didn't want to eat the meal of excellence and quality, he basically wouldn't mind you going to another company and where it would be easier for them.
This is one area where Jobs has never let down on and the reason he can keep cranking out interesting, desirable products that consumers can't wait to get their hands on.
It's the unflinching, non-negotiable commitment to excellence that continues to drive Jobs to bring to the market successful product after successful product.
