Steve Jobs: The Captain of Cool - 7

"Much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on."

It's amazing when you look at someone like Steve Jobs and hear him say he had stumbled into a lot of things that later on turned out to be priceless.

I like what he says in what led to the stumbling: his curiosity and intuition. Curiosity and intuition are the foundational building blocks to coming up with creative products, services, questions and solutions.

What's exciting is allowing ourselves to let go and be led by these two elements of our humanity.

A lot of people fail to comprehend that understanding and insight always come secondarily to these areas. We never know what were getting into as far as describing something until much later when it's already been developed and we start to see what it is we have.

How many times, even when products have been developed, have we seen customers take them and use them in a totally unexpected way than we first envisioned? It happens all the time. People think of all sorts of creative ways to use the product far beyond what we originally developed it for.

Curiosity and intuition lead us more to acts of faith that we can't usually give an explantion to till much further on down the road.

Apple (AAPL) was built on these foundation blocks, along with other products that have come out of the company. Those able to operate in this way are almost impossible to figure out what they are going to do next, as the explanation hasn't even come to them yet, as they tinker and follow their passions.

We need to follow our curiosity and intuition, and allow ourselves to stumble into great things that create tremendous value down the road. Better yet, we need to release our people to do the same thing.
