“I was taught to put my best effort into anything I did, and I can honestly say I've always done that.”
Mary Kay made that statement shortly before she died, reflecting on how she handled things in her life.
When you consider many people, before they die, think on the things that were most important to them, it's telling that Mary Kay thought of doing the best she could at whatever she attempted as one of the most valuable attributes she had.
If we can reach that simple state of execution of her goals that Mary Kay did, most of us would be successful at whatever we attempted in life.
There is nothing more we can do than give our best effort, do that and we've already accomplished a very important thing, whatever the rest of the outcomes will be.
As long as we're working on the right things in business leadership, I'm convinced those putting forth their very best efforts will never fail. After all, we can't give any more than our best.
The other side of it is knowing how to draw out the very best in our people as well. That is even more important than our own individual best. Our best needs to be directed toward providing the circumstances and culture where our people will thrive and desire to give everything they've got.
When we do that, similar to individual effort, I just don't think we can fail at what we're trying to accomplish. Again, the other key to it in business is making sure our best efforts are being directed toward the right things. Do that and there will be success.
Mary Kay showed the way it can be done.
