"Ash believed that without a sense of direction, it would be too easy for one to get lost in the business world, as in life."
This particular reality I can relate to personally. In the past, one of my problems was I was interested in so many different things, that it would interfere with my businesses, as it would become very easy to start bouncing around from one thing to another as I built them.
The truth is that almost anything can be turned into a successful business if you can find a way to offer existing products and services with your own unique twist to them.
But if you're not going in a specific direction and aimed at a specific target, you can find yourself going in a number of directions at the same time and not aware you're doing it.
How can you recognize if this is what's happening to you? Look at yourself and see if you have a sense of being lost. Do you feel aimless in your business or department? Do you feel torn between several different things at the same time?
If the answer to these types of questions are yes, then you need to step back and take inventory of what's happening. The sense of being lost comes from our taking on things that aren't going in the same direction. It shouldn't take too long to step outside the business, relax, and look at things objectively.
You'll find what it is that's making that sense of turmoil and feeling lost be part of your current personal experience. Once you find the reasons, then it's just a matter of running them through the purpose and vision of the business to see if it lines up with them.
What will be found out is somewhere, something has went off track. Once you get your sense of direction back, it's not hard to figure out what needs to be dropped or adjusted to line things back up where they need to be.
When you're feeling lost in your work, take a step back and look at what things are going in different directions. It is there that the discovery of what needs to be corrected will be found. It won't be long before you're back on a straight path and feel the sense of purpose again.
