She ... put herself in a positive frame of mind by, "making a list of only those good things that had happened to me during the previous twenty-five years."
The grind of business and the day-to-day challenges and disruptions can wear on even the strongest business leader. Mary Kay was no different in this regard.
In response, she performed that simple exercise above to get herself disciplined to focus on the positive things that had been happening throughout her life.
I like this because when we get worn out, we tend to drop our focus to negative things and look at the difficulty of problems that need to be solved, rather than enjoying the challenge.
Looking at the good things isn't an exercise in denial, rather it's a powerful tool to bring up back up to peak performance. It's extremely difficult to be creative and resourceful when you're down or possibly even feeling sorry for yourself.
The creating of a list of good events in our lives reminds us there are always things like that happening with and on us. That in turn brings us to a healthier framework and point of reference we can then work from.
If you're getting worn out or developing negative thought patterns, try this simple exercise and read the list you made to bring out out of the darkness into the light. It's an easy and useful tool to keep us on an even keel.
