We Need Leaders Who ...
5. ... follow a moral compass that points in the right direction regardless of the trends.
At first glance at the statement by Mary Kay, it looks like she's abandoning the idea of following trends in the industry we serve. I don't think that's what she meant here. Rather, it seems she meant there are trends in life in general that emerge throughout the years, and simply following them regardless of what they represent is to be disqualified from being a true leader.
It's similar to cheap politicians that take polls to make decisions rather than take a leadership role and action based on what's really best for the people of a nation.
A compass implies there's a specific direction it will always point in. No matter what's happening around us, where that compass points needs to be the journey we continue to travel.
Companies and business leaders that don't follow the known direction and purpose will get lost in the wilderness of trends, where there is never a way out, as there are always some emerging and others ending. Again, this isn't just talking about business trends, but social as well.
We need to know and live our values as leaders in a company. That more than anything else is where the compass will be pointing. Principled leaders will never leave that direction to follow the latest pressure and trends from a world that is trying to push and prod them in the direction they want them to take.
If we remain true to who we are, we will stay the course for our people and the customers we serve. Mary Kay was right, we need leaders willing to take the directions best for those we serve, no matter what pressures from the outside try to force us off our path.
Mary Kay never left the path and direction she knew she wanted and needed to take; neither did the people working with her.
