We Need Leaders Who ...
4. who live with people to know their problems and live with God in order to solve them.
Just the statement above shows Mary Kay was a true leader. After all, how many business leaders to day would even dare to make that statement publicly? It took a lot of guts to do it.
What was telling to me was how she focuses on "living with people." She was saying that unless you walk with people and see their problems first hand, it's really impossible to truly identify with what they're struggling with.
We've got to walk with them in a real way to understand what they're facing. The first step in solving a problem is not only understanding what it is outwardly, but what it means to the person inwardly. To only focus on outwardly solving something without dealing with the inner, is to only offer half a solution.
If the inner isn't helped with, the outward problem will come back over and over again. Those who fully focus on their people and what they face, will help people far more than those that only deal with the obvious.
Even products or services that are created for consumers will be the most successful that not only take care of the outward need, but deals with the inward problem as well.
Mary Kay knew that looking nice couldn't make a woman inwardly satisfied and feel good about herself. She knew that financial success alone wouldn't be enough for those she chose to serve. That's why she always emphasized God being first, family second and ourselves third. She knew to help people with wholly, she had to help them from the inside out.
To have one of her consultants be successful financially at the expense of her marriage, children or spiritually would have been a failure to Mary Kay, if that was how her purpose and message was received.
Mary Kay lived what she spoke, and according to her belief in what a leader should be, passed with flying colors.
