"Thatcher's political and economic philosophy emphasized free markets and since gaining power she had experimented in selling off nationalized industries starting with the National Freight company, most of the large utilities followed."
If nothing else Margaret Thatcher was bold. When you look at many of our leaders today, they won't do much without taking polls and ensuring they're not going to get into trouble doing the right thing. Many times they'd rather keep their popularity up than take bold actions.
Anyway, what I like about the statement concerning Thatcher is that she experimented with things as such a high level. So much had been done leading up to the changes people in Britain wanted, that the way wasn't completely clear on the best steps to take.
The reason why it's so impressive is every step she took was under scrutiny and in most cases hated by her opposition. So she was willing to put herself at risk in the public eye and take whatever consequences came her way.
This is the type of boldness we need in our leaders, or in being leaders ourselves. To me there is far too many wimpy leaders who are afraid to take actions because of the increasing number of special interest groups that sprout up daily. If we continue to do business based on their interests, we'll end up paralyzed into inaction by attempting to please everybody.
There is starting to become too much clutter out there to try to please everybody. We need to focus on operating and taking actions based upon our vision and purpose. This endless chasing after the next crises will have to stop. We are starting to get bogged down or caught in spider webs of agendas where we are stuck in the position of not being able to move in one direction or another without offending somebody's sensibilities.
How can we stop it? Neglect our detractors and the endless causes people espouse. There's no way we'll be able to continue to attempt to please or address them all. The best thing we can do as a business it to continue to develop great products and services, while offering great customer service.
When it comes down to it, that's the reason a business will excel and survive.
