"I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near."
I like it when great leaders get down to the reality of what it takes to be successful, no matter what our chosen field of endeavor.
Any success we have will not happen without hard work, it's as simple as that.
What about all those stories told what seem like instant successes? In truth most of them aren't based upon long-term reality. For example, you might hear about a person that gets some type of quick contract that propels them to a huge windfall in their business at the beginning of their launch.
You don't hear about what happens after that though. Did they know what to do with that windfall? Do they have the grit and determination, along with hard work and wisdom to build something over the long haul? You don't hear those types of things when listening to testimonials from people. You hear about a one time deal or situation that happened to bring them some quick success. Knowing what to do with that success over a period of time is much different.
Margaret Thatcher grew through a series of jobs and appointments to reach her goal. It wasn't an overnight success, it was one she worked hard on for her whole life until she achieved it. The processes and overcoming obstacles were her training ground to perpare her for what lay ahead for her.
Having a plan, working hard at it, adapting as you go and never giving up will get people close to, if not at, where they want to end up at in their lives. Be careful of the so-called success stories that imply it is easy and people made this or that in a short period of time. The stories are mostly true, but it doesn't mean there was any success later on. It just means for a one-time deal they did well.
It's like some music bands through the years that were one-hit wonders. They got their one hit early on, and basically quit working hard because they thought they had made it because it happened to happen early in their short careers. The really successful ones are those that worked hard and consistently years after year with their craft. They're the names we remember.
That's the only way we'll achieve managerial and business success as well. Margaret Thatcher is a great example of how it works in real life.
