It's hard to talk about someone like Margaret Thatcher in relationship to management and business because of her chosen profession of politics.
The problem is there are a large number of people that find it almost impossible to separate what they perceive as politics from regular life. In other words, they sift everything through a political mind and way of thinking, and find it almost impossible to look at life through any other lense.
So in talking about Margaret Thatcher, it will be hard to talk about the numerous things she accomplished for business worldwide, without it simply being looked upon as something she politically did, rather than accomplished from legitimate beliefs.
Time Magazine once wrote about Thatcher saying: "She was the catalyst who set in motion a series of interconnected events that gave a revolutionary twist to the century's last two decades and helped mankind end the millennium on a note of hope and confidence. The triumph of capitalism, the almost universal acceptance of the market as indispensable to prosperity, the collapse of Soviet imperialism, the downsizing of the state on nearly every continent and in almost every country in the world — Margaret Thatcher played a part in all those transformations, and it is not easy to see how any would have occurred without her. Champion of free minds and markets, she helped topple the welfare state and make the world safer for capitalism."
It's the type of statement her friends have loved and her enemies have hated.
As far as the "Iron Lady" moniker, she inherited that from the former Soviet Union who meant it to be an insult, but was glad to adopt it as her own.
Much of this was related to her standards which she refused to budge from. She didn't lead from polls like some past presidents have done in the U.S. Her leadership style was also her own.
This look at Margaret Thatcher as a leader and one of the most influential people in the 20th century should be extremely helpful and challenging for those in the business world who aspire to excel.
