Focus on what you can control!
There is nothing like a good situation that you have no control over to get your focus off what matters.
What can you do about something you have no control over? Pretty much nothing. So I wonder why it is so many business leaders try to tackle that which they can have not influence over?
I think it's just a human response, but one we need to get discipline over. The very thing we think is a huge problem, will in reality, cause a big problem by taking our focus off of what really matters: that which we can control!
That which we can't control is just a seductress. It will woo us to what seems important and crucial, while ignoring the very things we are truly dependent on for success.
What is important here is maintaining focus. We discipline ourselves into doing that by continually reminding ourselves and our people on what is getting us to the mountaintop. Anything we can't control isn't one of those things.
The thing about focus is it's like something living. It can't just be assumed and left lying around and not being fed. It needs to be propped up and reminded continually on what it is that we need to remain fixated on.
What's great about this is it's not usually a huge amount of things that someone has to have a super memory for. It's normally several key things the company is and stands for, as it is applied to whatever products or services we're engaged in.
As many sports managers say about their opponents: "we can't control what they do, but we can control what we do." In the end that's all that we need to focus on.
