
Same-store sales at Wal-Mart (WMT), the strongest measure of retail health, grew by 2.4 percent to exceed analysts' expectations. Analysts projected only a 0.8 percent gain for the retail giant. Wal-Mart had projected the increase would be around 2 percent.
Breaking it down, same-store sales at Wal-Mart supercenters came in at 1.6 percent, while Sam's Club Warehouse grew by a strong 6.9 percent. Gasoline sales aren't included as part of the figures.
The company expects same-store sales in July to grow by between 1 and 2 percent, they said in a statement. The measurement of sales is based upon stores
that have been open for more than a year in the U.S.
Key drivers of the growth were the three main home entertainment categories of TVs, computers and video games. Food was the other major impetus behind the growth.
The company reaffirmed that this has been a tough quarter, and is going on the offensive by cutting prices on "thousands" of items this month to draw consumers into the store.
An interesting aside to all of this is the increase of computer sales, which should make a huge impact upon Dell (DELL) which has struggled for so long. Dell recently starting selling computers through Wal-Mart.
