Welch's 21 Steps to Management Greatness - 15b
"Harness Your People for Competitive Advantage"
When we hire people that line up with our purpose and values, we acquire a great benefit for the company. It makes things like communication, speed and removing obstacles far easier and quicker.
Keeping that in mind, we need to learn, as Welch says, to "harness our people for "competitive advantage."
The most important part of that is in recognizing the value that each person in the organization represents. That's the beginning place in drawing out the immense amount of gold within them to then turn into a competitive advantage.
All the steps in the world to attempt to use the value the resides in our people won't work if they don't believe that you believe in them. In my experience, that's why so many attempts to do this fail in companies. Workers no if we're sincere or not.
With Welch, he not only expected, but almost demanded that people bring everything to the table when they got together. That's why so many people loved to work for him even though he could be so intense at times.
People working for General Electric knew Welch appreciated everything they had to offer, and responded by opening up and bring it all forth.
It's one of the key reasons the company is tops in most of its businesses, and still garners the respect and fear of its competitors. It comes from realizing and appreciating the tremendous value residing in the people they hire, and tapping into it for the benefit of the company and its customers.
