Welch's 21 Steps to Management Greatness - 13
Put Values First
"Don't focus too much on the numbers. Numbers aren't the vision; numbers are the products. Focus more on the softer values of building a team, sharing ideas, exciting others."
Sometimes the most stifling thing a business leader can do is focus on the numbers, as Welch says. And as he adds, numbers can in no way be the vision, they are simply the product or measurement of the vision.
While there can be revenue goals that are given to be reached, those goals can pretty much be put aside while the strategy to generate revenue then focused on. The knowledge of the goal of the numbers isn't what's negative, it's the excessive focusing on those numbers that harm a company or leader.
The reason it's wrong is because you get your eye off of what it is that will bring you the numbers, which is our customers and our people. The only thing excessive focus on numbers will bring you is stress, and inevitably that stress will be extended to those you are accountable for.
If that happens, the real chance of meeting our numbers will disappear. When that happens, we even focus on the numbers more, and it becomes a vicious cycle.
When we focus on the right things like motivating our people, free communication and building great teams, the numbers will always take care of themselves.
