"I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance."
To me, the only way a person can lose is by giving up. Jobs says that about successful entrepreneurs as well.
There are two key things to take account of way when talking about this. First, is the perseverance itself. It's easy enough to understand: You Don't Give Up!
But there's a weakness within this if a second major part isn't included with that, and that is the ability to adapt when you're on the wrong track.
If we are the type of person that won't give up but won't change either, all that will result in is failure. It's just another way of saying you're stubborn. A stubborn person is one who won't stop going but also doesn't see the need to change. It would be better to give up than be that. If you give up at least everyone else can get on with what's important.
What's better is someone who is flexible and understand there may be a number of paths, twists and turns needed to reach the end result. Perseverance is never giving up on the end goal, while being willing to adapt, adjust and change as needed to get there.
Perseverence without flexibility is a fast way to failure. But the two working together are just about unbeatable. Jobs ups and downs with Apple (AAPL) are proof he lives what he speaks.
