We Need Leaders Who ...
3. ... who inspire and motivate rather than intimidate and manipulate.
The seemingly endless battle over the best way to get results from our people continues on, and will probably continue on indefinitely.
Even so, though some industries require more hands on management than others, overall, trusting the people we hire or contract out to, to be adults, is important to me.
There is no way to really try to deal with this type of thing on a micro level. To get rid of intimidation and manipulation is to deal with it in a systemic way.
If everyone is part of the process from the beginning of projects, if communication is truly open and ideas welcomed, if people and teams are publicly encourage for results, then you'll see a lot of the manipulation and intimidation vanish.
Most the time that type of behavior is related to the way a business is set up and the way verbal and monetary rewards are determined and handed out.
It comes down to the business culture we foster and follow through on.
Inspiration and motivation comes from particpation and communication. Include those in all processes of a business and most of the problems connected to manipulation and intimidation will vanish.
Mary Kay had very little problems in these areas because of how she lived out these principles every day at the company. I must be practiced, not just talked about.
